ROLE OBJECTIVE:

Initiate and lead new product development projects with a focus on Prime Film Label development, utilizing or gaining knowledge of Film Facestock materials, Adhesives (emulsion, hot melt) and Silicone Release Systems. Working with industry suppliers, develop novel Film materials and products for Avery Dennison’s FRNA business from initial concept to successful commercial implementation. This is a high visibility position requiring a motivated individual, with high level technical skills, and a passion for delivering results.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Lead product development projects, which require detailed component design and analysis.
  • Identify and develop new and improved products for Avery Dennison’s FRNA businesses that deliver increased sales and profits for the division as well as meet customers’ technical and market needs.
  • Assist in the identification and development of strategies to ensure that the company maintains industry leadership in materials and label technology.
  • Lead or participate in cross-functional teams to meet corporate objectives involving product development for any or all label segments.
  • Lead technical efforts to meet the business needs for sales, marketing, and manufacturing requirements.
  • Drive patent applications for the corporation to protect intellectual property.
  • Identification of new product opportunities which may have strategic value to the corporation.
  • Improved manufacturing operational excellence as a result of materials development (impact on productivity and cost reduction, quality, and process improvements).
  • Troubleshooting and problem solving of technically challenging issues.
  • Technical consultation as required ensuring leadership position for the corporation.
  • Identify and champion profitable new products and technology opportunities globally by managing and utilizing the design and development process.
  • Identify customer needs and conceptualize the novel product opportunity (through customer meetings or other market research).
  • Demonstrate technical and commercial feasibility (through pilot scale trials and full scale manufacturing ramp-up), and launch the commercial product.
  • Maintain broad industry knowledge base of Films component materials and products by: developing and honing technical skills at conferences/trade shows, working with business units and customers to understand process and needs, and maintaining contact with industry suppliers.
  • Ensure technical excellence of Product Technology and Innovation (PTI) by sharing best practices through presentations and mentoring / training sessions with both internal and external customers.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • BS or MS in Science or Engineering Discipline (Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer Science, Materials etc.) with proven business understanding.
  • A minimum of 3 – 5 years’ experience in label or related industry with focus on new product development or other easily transferable skills.
  • Knowledge of statistical tools, including DOE required, with preference given to certified Six Sigma Black Belts.
  • Core competencies require: customer focus, functional/technical skills, action oriented, business acumen, innovative management, intellectual horse power, organizational agility, political savvy, drive for results, and team building.
  • Demonstrated ability to connect technology with business needs; understands market and technology trends.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate product development concepts into successful key product commercialization.
  • Successful demonstration of commercialized new products with major customers, from concept through commercialization.
  • New product development work is primarily performed at pilot facilities located in Concord, OH and at internal domestic manufacturing sites.
  • Maximum 25% Domestic and <5% International travel required (both to external customers and to internal manufacturing sites).
